Curried Apple and Date Chutney

INGREDIENTS

Curried Apple and Date Chutney

  • 4 Tbsp. (60 mL) Crisco® All-Vegetable Shortening
  • 2 large tart green apples
  • 15 pitted dates, coarsely chopped
  • 1/4 C. (50 mL) apple juice
  • 1 C. (250 mL) chicken broth
  • 2 tsp. (10 mL) cider vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp. (30 mL) prepared Dijon mustard
  • 1 to 2 tsp. (5 to 10 mL) curry powder or to taste
  • 1 tsp. (5 mL) dried thyme (or 2 tsp. (10 mL) chopped fresh thyme)

DIRECTIONS

  1. Melt shortening in a heavy skillet over medium heat. Add apples and dates; cook for about 10 minutes or until apples are almost tender. Add apple juice and chicken broth. Simmer for about 5 minutes or until sauce has thickened and apples are tender.
  2. Mix in vinegar, mustard, curry powder and thyme. Season with salt and pepper, as desired.
  3. Serve warm.
