Classic Sugar Cookies

INGREDIENTS

Classic Sugar Cookies

  • 1 stick Crisco® All-Vegetable Shortening Sticks
  • 1 to 1 1/2 C. (250 to 375 mL) sugar
  • 1/2 C. (125 mL) firmly packed brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. (30 mL) milk
  • 3 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 tsp. (5 mL) pure vanilla extract
  • 4 C. (1 L) all-purpose flour
  • 1 to 1 1/2 tsp. (5 to 7 mL) baking soda
  • 1 to 1 1/2 tsp. (5 to 7 mL) cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp. (5 mL) salt
  • colored sugar and decors (optional)
  • Buttery Cream Frosting
  • 4 C. (1 L) icing sugar
  • 1/3 C. (75 mL) Crisco® Golden All-Vegetable Shortening
  • 1 to 1 1/2 tsp. (5 to 7 mL) pure vanilla extract
  • 6 to 7 Tbsp. (90 to 105 mL) milk
  • food color (optional)

DIRECTIONS

  1. Cookies: Combine shortening, granulated sugar and brown sugar; beat at medium speed until well blended. Add milk. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Add Pure Vanilla Extract. Combine flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt. Mix into butter flavor shortening mixture until well blended. Chill for 1 hour. Heat oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll out 1/3 of dough at a time to about 1/4” (0.6 cm) thickness on floured surface. Cut out with cookie cutters. Place 2″ (5 cm) apart on ungreased baking sheets. Sprinkle with colored sugars and decors or leave plain and frost when cooled. Bake for 6 to 8 minutes or until edges of cookies are slightly golden. Remove immediately to cooling rack.
  2. Frosting: Combine icing sugar, shortening and Pure Vanilla Extract; slowly blend in milk to reach desired consistency. Beat on high speed for 5 minutes or until smooth and creamy. Tint frosting with food color, if desired.
