Crispy Fried Mushrooms with Chipotle Mayonnaise Dip

Fried mushrooms are whole button mushrooms coated with a yummy batter and then deep fried. They make a delicious and perfectly crispy snack dipped in an easy-to-make spicy mayo. Enjoy.

Makes: About 12 mushrooms, ¼ cup (50 mL) dipping sauce


  • Crispy Fried Mushrooms

  • ½ cup 125 mL Robin Hood® Original All Purpose Flour
  • ½ tsp 2 mL salt
  • ¼ tsp 1 mL dry mustard
  • ½ tsp 2 mL regular or smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp 2 mL garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ½ cup 125 mL buttermilk, well shaken
  • 1 tsp 5 mL chipotle hot pepper sauce, optional
  • 8oz 200 g whole button mushrooms
  • Crisco® Canola Oil for frying
  • Chipotle Mayonnaise Dip

  • ¼ cup 50 mL prepared mayonnaise
  • 1 to 2 tsp 5 to 10mL chipotle hot pepper sauce


  1. Mushrooms: Combine first 6 ingredients in re-sealable plastic bag. In medium bowl, combine buttermilk and pepper sauce. Add mushrooms and let soak for about 5 minutes. Meanwhile, heat 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5cm) oil in deep fryer or large deep saucepan to 375 ºF (190 ºC). Remove mushrooms from buttermilk mixture and toss in flour mixture. Carefully drop 2 to 3 mushrooms into hot oil and fry, for 2 to 3 minutes or until golden brown. Drain on paper towel lined plate.
  2. Chipotle Mayonnaise Dip: Combine mayonnaise and hot pepper sauce and serve with mushrooms.
